Sheryll Lynne Photography Blog bio picture

About Me: I'm a Sagittarius, with a Capricorn rising sign and a Scorpio moon sign. My favorite movie ever is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "Moulin Rouge" and "Say Anything".  I can play the guitar and piano, but I'm in love with the mandolin and banjo. Cupcakes. I love them.  I am a creature of habit and my Ipod will usually play Coldplay and anything else that I can dance to (which is practically everything). I love traveling. I love big cities, but still enjoy the small ones. I have always wanted to visit Morocco & Florence, Italy. I want to learn Portuguese (followed by Tagalog, French and Japanese). I'll do it some day. I am a fan of boots- all kinds of boots. Sundried tomatoes are quite possibly the best things you could put on a pizza. I'm bad at math. I'm pretty dang good at Halo 3. No joke. I could watch "The Office" and "Heroes" over and over again. If there's a photobooth nearby, that's where you'll find me. I love anything vintage- especially cameras and bicycles. The only sunglasses I'll wear are the ginormous "old lady" kinds. I sing loudly in the car (to anything and everything even if I don't know the lyrics).  I love to laugh and pretty much find humor in everything. I believe every person has an interesting story to tell. And most importantly, I love to travel with my camera (hint hint). So scroll down, click here and there- and get to know me and the world as I see it.

Flannel was never cool on me.

Everyone has the awkward stage growing up, right? Mine lasted…. a LOOOONG time. I was flipping through some photos and came across one that made me laugh (well, I laughed pretty hard at a lot of them actually). My sisters will TOTALLY hate that I posted this up here (just don’t pass this along to them):

I’m the hottie on the left. haha!

And, after 4 years of keeping my hair as long as I could possibly have it, I CHOPPED IT OFF. Thanks to Katie- because she was the one who told me to chop it in the first place. And if you are in need of a hair appointment with a fabulous hairstylist, go to Salon Keiji. I absolutely love everyone there, and Kasey was the awesome chic who took the scissor my hair. Don’t mind the low webcam quality!

The contest I was running as been extended til the end of March, due to some techinical difficulties, so make sure you send those entries!

And lastly, I have decided to stop sitting on a few of the photo projects I wanted to start so many years ago. I have a photography project that begins April 2010 and continues until December 2010. I’m currently taking in applications for people wanting to step comfortably (or uncomfortably) in front of my camera for a closeup. What am I looking for? Models, call of duty gamers, vision mongers, teachers, music makers, bus drivers, firefighters, bank tellers, astronomers, social activists, dreamers, husbands, wives, twins, bakers, revolutionists, etc… Looking for a variety of ages… Know someone who’d be interested? Share this with them! So if you are in the Salt Lake City or Louisville area and would like to take part, leave your info (your information will not be shared) by clicking here. All chosen applicants will receive an email by March 30, 2010. ;)

P.S. If there are any spelling or grammar errors in this post, I blame my twitter friend, findMiMi, because I was in such a rush to please her eagerness! (Kidding!)

Dear Spring, Please hurry. Love, Me. P.S. Contests rule. HOLLA!

So I spent a few hours writing up what turned out to be an extremely long blog post. After reading it over, I decided to put a pause on it and post up a contest.

Yeah, I’m easily distracted.

I think it’s the cabin fever. It happens here and there during the winter season and towards the end I’m begging spring to get here faster. Seriously. I love snow and I love the holidays… But after a few weeks, I’m done and ready to move on. I can only take so much of it before I’m itching to poke my eyes out.

So in honor of the new season that’s about to grace us with its presence (yeah, I know it’s still a little ways away… I’M EXCITED), it’s time for some spring cleaning and (drumroll please) a CONTEST. Spring will mark the beginning of the new website and blog (it’s long overdue). Lots of things need to be updated and there’s no better season to celebrate “out with the old, in with the new” than spring. But before that happens, let’s throw a contest out your way!

I love lifestyle sessions and unfortunately I rarely get to photograph them. I’m not sure what it is but I don’t get many families wanting to do them, which is sad because, uhh- THAT’S WHAT I DO. But as Bob Dylan put it best, “These times, they are a-changin’.” You’ll be seeing more lifestyle sessions on my blog in the near future. So for those of you wanting to get one of these rad sessions done, this contest is for you. For those insisting that they just sit in front of a camera saying “cheese”, please exit to your left (or stick around until I can get you to fall in love with this particular style).

What do you have to do and what will you win? I like simplicity. So all I want is for you to tell me WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO and WHY I SHOULD PHOTOGRAPH YOU DOING IT (let’s keep it clean, folks). Foreals. If you like to skateboard, HOLLA! I’ll ride up along side of you with my camera documenting your love for the wheels. If you and that love of your life love pillow fights, HOLLA! I may just jump in and smack some peeps in the face after I take a few shots. If you and the fam love to fly kites, ride horses, or even play leap frog…. Um, HOLLA! I’d love to be there snapping photos.

I will choose a few finalists and I’ll have my readers vote. And what does the winner get hooked up with? A complimentary session, a private online gallery, AND a $150 print credit (yes, you can buy extra prints, but there is absolutely no obligation).

So let’s go through this with a little more info:

1. Send me (in a MINIMUM of 100 words) what you love to do, and why I should be there to photograph it. This can be a solo session, or a group session. You can write it in essay form, or poetic verse- whatever floats your boat. All I ask is that you rock my world.
2. The deadline is at midnight March 5, 2010.
3. ENTRIES MUST BE EMAILED TO S@SHERYLL-LYNNE.COM (You will get a confirmation reply that your entry has been received within 48 hours).
4. You can only enter ONCE per household.
5. Sessions must be done in 2010 (during available dates), and print credit will expire within 30 days of your session.
6. The big bad prize ain’t transferrable. You won it for a reason, right? Take it advantage of it!

Finalists will be announced during the third week of March, and voting will commence soon after.

And before I leave you to think up some wonderful entry ideas, I’m posting up a photo that has been up here before. It was a lifestyle session done last year (but it’s one of my favorites). The father figure in this family loves to golf, but his love for that is trumped by his sons’ love for wrestling.
Send those entries in!

xoxo, Sheryll

P.S. Are you following me on twitter yet?

Featured Engagement Session : Carl + Alisa

Before you give me the look like, “Um, Sheryll? You’ve only posted once this year…”, just know that I’m totally going to post more soon. I’d give you the entire “I’m SUPER busy” reason, however I think I may have used that one too many times… Really, 2010 has been crazy so far and I don’t see it slowing down soon, BUT I will post more featured sessions up!

I’ve ALWAYS been a fan of Valentine’s Day (single or not) and to be quite honest, it’s one of my favorite holidays. So in honor of February 14th, I’m listing my absolute favorite romantic films. For those who know me, you know I’m not a gal that loves the “mushy” stuff… but I’ll admit, I am a closet romantic.

Just don’t let that get out…

1. Moulin Rouge
2. Definitely, Maybe
3. What Dreams May Come
4. Amelie
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
6. Before Sunrise
7. Before Sunset
8. Anastasia (yes, the cartoon)
9. Sliding Doors
10. The Story of Us
11. Up

Those are mine… What are yours?

Today’s post is an engagement session I did in Salt Lake City, Utah for Alisa and Carl. They’re a sweet couple, and I’m excited to be shooting their wedding in April (and in Kentucky!).

New Beginnings + Year in Review + My Fave of 2009

Happy New Year!

2009. What can I say? It has been one wild and crazy ride… I have managed to accomplish so much in just 365 days and it’s only the start of more amazing things to come. I have had plenty ups and downs this year but I’ve learned so many valuable lessons about life (and although I’ve always managed to bounce back up after a fall, I can now bounce back up a little faster).

The new year brings new ideas, new projects, and most definitely a new direction. So, I made a bold step and now have an office and studio space in the downtown Salt Lake area. I know, right? ME! That’s right. I now have a place I can call “work” where the XBOX won’t distract me. It was a huge move into making sure my personal life and work life stayed separate (I was THIS close to punching myself in the face). So come visit me! I’m sharing space with some extremely talented photographers (Duston Todd Photography, Matthew Ryan Photography, and Joanna Taylor Photography). AND the best part is that it’s 10 walking minutes away from Les Madeleines (only my favorite bakery in Utah).

And if you’ve paid attention to my blog or my facebook, you’ve noticed that I’ve been frequenting the Louisville, Kentucky area a bit. I am expanding my business and although I have no limitations to where I shoot, I will mainly be in Salt Lake and Louisville. I have been working with a lot of fantastic people in Kentucky, and I’ll be there at least once a month. So, yes- that means I will also be looking into getting some office space in that area (sorry, Kentucky- you’re still stuck with me for the time being).

And I know I keep mentioning a new look for the website. It was supposed to have a makeover but due to absolutely no time, I never got around to it. So here’s hoping that it will have its new look in February. The blog will also be undergoing a few changes, and most importantly- I will not be trying to blog every single session I have. I’ll be posting “featured” sessions and I’ll be pretty particular about what I post. That means I’ll have more time, which also means my blogging will be more consistent (yay for consistency!).

As for the “big news” I said I was announcing- well, it will have to wait a few more weeks. I know. I’m a tease. But I’m not ready to announce it (and NO, for the last time, I am NOT pregnant). But I’m working with Joanna Taylor on it and we hope to announce it soon!

And because I couldn’t really narrow down my favorites of the year, I decided to post up a “Year in Review” on my Facebook Page. If you aren’t a fan,…well- what are you waiting for?? Join it. And join it because all the cool kids are doing it. Trust me.

BUT, I did want to post up my favorite photo of 2009. It was hard to decide, and I honestly had to sit back and ask myself, “If you could only hang up one photo on your wall to display, what would it be?” So I chose the photo below (and I’m sure you’ve already seen it). I am in love with love and a closet romantic, and even though there were others that I absolutely adored, this one was the photo that made me realize that I’m doing exactly what I love to do, and I’m exactly on the path I want to be on.

So thank you, thank you, thank you! 2009 was a monumental year for me and 2010 looks even better. Ultimate goal of 2010? Shoot a wedding in Hawaii (holla back, destination brides!).

Check back next week for my first “featured” post: Jayme & Nathan’s Wedding. Gotta get back to clearing out my email inbox!
